Discussion on Distance Education for the Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Chen, Y.-C., Kuo, C.-H.
English Abstract COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of nearly all campus and learning places, challenging the education system across the world. To lower the impact of learning loss, colleges, and middle and elementary schools have been shifting onsite classes to distance education. Have the older adults whose learning places have been closed used distance education to maintain their learning process during the epidemic prevention period? Distance education was not the primary choice before the pandemic, especially for the older adults. To investigate the role of distance education for the older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have conducted this research. The work is divided into three stages, the first stage focuses on the training of video communications app. The second and third stages cover distance education programs, while Taiwan raised its pandemic prevention and closed learning places. The age of six participants in this study, who are members of musical instrument curriculum, is over 65. The researcher taught how to play the musical instrument through video communications app and instant-messaging software during the pandemic. Data were collected from the video recorded, group chat from instant messages, teaching logs, and interviews. Based on the observations and feedback from students, the researchers modified the instructional design. The results show that, during the epidemic prevention period, unexpected situations frequently occurred testing teacher’s ability to adapt to change. The main difficulty for the older adults is device operation, and enhancing the ability to operate is helpful to the learning experience. Distance education can be easily disrupted when family members are at home. Based on the findings of this study, practical suggestions have been provided to educators and for future studies.Keywords:COVID-19, older adults, distance education, continuous never
