Feasibility Study of Exercise as a Social Prescription for the Care of the Older Adults
Liu, I.-C.
English Abstract In contrast to medical prescriptions, social prescriptions are non-medical ways to promote the health and well-being of patients or those in need of help, such as exercise prescriptions developed to address a range of diseases and medication histories of older adults. Since senior sports are generally conducted as group activities and are often viewed as recreational in nature, their benefit in senior care is not evident due to limited participation by medical personnel. This study explored through a literature review and in-depth interviews the technical, administrative, and political feasibility of sports as a social prescription for primary health care services for seniors. From the perspectives of physicians and exercise instructors, these exercise prescriptions are to be customizable and one-on-one in design and implementation. Prior to beginning exercises, both believed that in addition to understanding the senior's medication and exercise history, their physical function testing is needed to recommend exercise prescriptions. The study suggests that a regional trial be conducted by the government to examine the feasibility of exercise as a form of senior care and promote its role as primary care for seniors. It also suggests that the government should nurture talents and encourage collaboration between medical and exercise professionals, and encourage division of work. Keywords:social prescription, senior campaign, exercise prescription, senior care
