A Preliminary Exploration of Tabletop Game Design for Indigenous Elderly
Hong, H. , Ruan Bo Xun
English Abstract As the era of an aging society approaches, the social and health issues faced by the elderly are becoming increasingly prominent. Due to the gradual decline in physiological functions, many elderly individuals are unwilling or afraid to leave their homes, directly impacting their social lives. To help delay the aging process, Taiwan has designed various games for the elderly, among which "tabletop games" have become a popular option in recent years. The application of tabletop games among elderly people in the community is gaining attention. This study aims to design suitable tabletop games for indigenous elderly individuals to promote their physical and mental health as well as social activities. Based on indigenous culture and long-term care knowledge, the first tabletop game was designed and tested by 10 indigenous university students. Through evaluation forms and focus group discussions, the concepts and rules were revised, leading to the development of the second version of the game. Subsequently, this study tested the second game with 4 indigenous elderly individuals. After interviews and further modifications, the third version of the game was created. Finally, the third game was tested with 3 indigenous elderly individuals, and after interviews, a final tabletop game called "Guardian Hand" was designed. "Guardian Hand" incorporates commonly used indigenous languages, long-term care knowledge, and interactive elements to ensure that indigenous elderly individuals do not feel a sense of distance from the game. The issue of leisure games for indigenous elderly people deserves more research resources from the government, industry, and academia, ensuring that every elderly person can live a joyful and fulfilling life. Keywords:Elderly Indigenous People, Tabletop Games, Game Design
