Financial Literacy and Financial Education Needs of Middle-aged and Elderly Learners: A Study on Community College Students
Zeng, B.-R., Chen, Y-C.
English Abstract With the intensification of global population aging, Taiwan is also set to enter a super-aged society by 2025, which will have profound impacts on social structure and economic development. The economic security issues of middle-aged and older adults are becoming increasingly prominent, especially in terms of the labor market, social welfare systems, and personal financial management. Research indicates that financial literacy among Taiwanese citizens is generally low, particularly among middle-aged and older adults, who lack sufficient knowledge about financial markets, products, and services. This directly affects their economic security and quality of life.
This study aims to explore the current state of financial literacy and the demand for financial education among middle-aged and older students in community universities. It examines their financial literacy across three dimensions: financial knowledge, financial attitudes, and financial behaviors, and analyzes the impact of demographic variables on their financial literacy. The results show that middle-aged and older students perform best in financial knowledge and relatively poorly in financial attitudes, with improvements in financial knowledge and financial behaviors having the greatest impact on overall financial literacy.
The study finds that the financial knowledge of middle-aged and older students varies by education level and marital status, while financial attitudes do not differ significantly when controlling background variables. Financial behaviors, however, vary according to employment status and monthly income. Additionally, the demand for types of financial education courses among middle-aged and older students is concentrated on retirement planning and investment management, indicating that financial education is crucial for enhancing their economic security and quality of life. The preferences for learning methods are relatively balanced, showing a tendency towards diversified learning times and methods.
Based on the research results, this study provides relevant suggestions for improving financial literacy and education for middle-aged and older students and outlines directions for future research. Keywords:community university, middle-aged and older adults, financial literacy, financial education, economic security
