A Study on the Learning Effectiveness of Middle-aged and Older Adults Participating in an Aromatherapy Program
Chang, H.-C., Lee, Y.-H.
English Abstract This study employed Kirkpatrick’s four-level evaluation model to examine the learning effectiveness of middle-aged and older adults participating in an aromatherapy program, focusing on reaction, learning, behavior, and results. The motivation of this study was to address the research gap in which existing studies have largely emphasized the therapeutic effects of aromatherapy, while relatively few have explored the outcomes derived from learning aromatherapy, thereby highlighting the novelty and value of this study. Eight participants aged 45 and above were selected for semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed that participants responded positively to the course content and hands-on activities, especially valuing experiential practice and peer interaction. At the learning level, they acquired essential knowledge of essential oils and massage techniques, enhancing their self-care abilities. In terms of behavior, most applied what they learned to improve sleep, manage emotions, and relieve pain, extending their practice to family care and home environment management. At the results level, participants reported improvements in physical and mental health, enhanced social interactions, and the development of self-directed health management habits. The study confirms that aromatherapy courses are practical and sustainable for promoting health among older adults. It is recommended that future course designs emphasize experiential learning and community engagement to enhance the well-being and quality of life of this population.Keywords:middle-aged and older adults, aromatherapy, learning effectiveness, Kirkpatrick model
