Accompaniment Through Rhythm: A Study on Promoting Life Adaptation among Migrant Family Caregivers in Rural Intergenerational Learning Settings through Percussion Ensemble Programs
Chang Yuan-Shuo
English Abstract Background: As Taiwanese society rapidly advances toward an aged population, migrant family caregivers have become an indispensable workforce within the long-term care system. Despite their critical role in daily caregiving, they have long faced challenges such as language barriers, cultural differences, physical and psychological stress, and social isolation. However, corresponding support resources and policy attention remain markedly insufficient, highlighting an urgent need for empirical research and institutional interventions to improve their circumstances. Methods: This study employed a fieldwork approach integrated with qualitative research methods. Using a practice-oriented research framework, it examined the effects of a percussion ensemble program designed around intergenerational learning between older adults and younger participants on the life adaptation of migrant family caregivers. The researcher collaborated closely with community practitioners, continuously observing, reflecting on, and refining the course design throughout the program, with an emphasis on participatory practice processes. Data collection included classroom observation records, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was applied to synthesize participants’ experiences and perceived impacts of the percussion ensemble activities. The study participants were migrant family caregivers residing in super-aged rural areas of Taiwan, who took part in a 12-week intergenerational percussion ensemble program, meeting once a week for two hours per session. Results: The findings indicate that migrant caregivers play a pivotal role within the long-term care system, while language and cultural barriers constitute their primary challenges. Through intergenerational percussion ensemble activities, caregivers and older adults were able to interact on an equal footing, facilitating cross-cultural exchange and strengthening emotional support, self-identity, and social connectedness. The program also enhanced community understanding and trust, fostering a more inclusive and resilient support network. Conclusion: Adopting a practice-oriented research approach, this study demonstrates that percussion ensemble programs designed around intergenerational learning can exert a positive influence on the quality of life of migrant family caregivers. It is therefore recommended that future cultural care–related policies incorporate multicultural music-based activities as a means to promote caregivers’ physical and mental well-being, as well as their social integration. Keywords:Percussion Ensemble, Migrant Family Caregivers, Rural Communities, Intergenerational Learning
