Promoting Mental Health in Rural Older Adults: A Community Survey and Intervention Experience
Lee, Y.-H., Chen, Y.-K.
English Abstract This study aimed to explore the mental health status of older adults in rural communities and to evaluate the effectiveness of a group-based intervention. The research was conducted in a rural community in Chiayi County, Taiwan, an area severely affected by low fertility rates, population outmigration, and rapid population aging. A mental health survey was first administered, revealing that the majority of residents (90.9%) demonstrated overall mental health levels at or above the normative range. However, participants showed comparatively lower levels of positive optimism, proactive life attitudes, and perceived competence, indicating room for further improvement in these domains. Based on these findings, an eight-week group counseling program focusing on self-awareness and emotion regulation was implemented to promote self-care and mental health among older adults. Posttest results indicated significant improvement for one participant with moderate distress, while others maintained good mental health. Additionally, qualitative interviews with five participants identified three key themes: (1) participation motives and habitual emotion-regulation strategies; (2) transformative experiences during the group process; and (3) post-group awareness and emotional responses. Overall, the findings demonstrate that a group intervention model emphasizing interpersonal interaction and self-care is both feasible and beneficial for older adults in rural contexts. Nevertheless, future interventions should incorporate greater cultural sensitivity and responsiveness to local life experiences to enhance program acceptance and sustainability. Keywords:older adults, mental health, group intervention, community practice
